The Q Value Breakthrough

NIF Fusion Energy Gain (Q Value) — 2019 to 2025
Q = fusion energy out ÷ laser energy in. For 25 years, JET held the record at Q = 0.67. NIF crossed Q = 1 in December 2022 — the first time in history. Each subsequent shot pushed it higher: Q = 1.5, then 2.2, then 4.13 in April 2025. The area under the curve is compressed progress that took 60 years to start and 3 years to accelerate.
★ BREAKEVEN: Q = 1.0 — JET held Q = 0.67 for 25 years. NIF crossed it December 2022. Everything above this line is new territory.

What Q means in practice
Q = 1 means you got back what you put in. Commercial fusion needs Q ≥ 10–20 to be economically viable. ITER is designed for Q ≥ 10. NIF is on a path — but physics Q is not wall-plug Q.

The Private Race — $9.7B and Counting

Private Fusion Funding by Company — Lollipop Chart (Total Raised, $M)
In 2021, virtually no private money was in fusion. By 2025, 53 companies raised $9.7 billion. Each dot represents a company's total capital raised. Commonwealth Fusion (MIT spinout) leads at $3B, backed by Nvidia, Google, and Morgan Stanley. Pacific Fusion's $900M Series A was the largest single fusion round ever. Microsoft signed the world's first fusion power purchase agreement with Helion.

The Global Investment Race

Government Fusion Investment by Country (Cumulative $B)
The US leads with 53% of global fusion funding, spending $1.4B in 2024 across DOE and NNSA. China is racing hard — committing $6.5B in 2023–2025 alone, triple the US annual rate. South Korea's KSTAR set a record in 2024: 100M°C plasma for 100 continuous seconds — seven times hotter than the sun's core.

ITER: A History of Schedule Slippage
ITER has been in development since 1985. The full D-T fusion target has moved from 2018 to 2039 — a 21-year slip. The 2024 revision added 8 more years and €5B in cost overruns. The original budget estimate was €5B; current estimates exceed €27B. For context: private companies like Commonwealth Fusion are targeting first plasma in 2030 on a fraction of that budget.
Cost escalation: €5B (original 1988) → €27B+ (2024 revised). A 5× overrun over 36 years.

Key Insights

From Q=0.003 to Q=4.13 in 6 years
NIF's Q value in 2018 was 0.003 — effectively nothing. By April 2025, it hit 4.13. That's a 1,377× improvement in six years, driven by better target design and higher laser energy. Progress is not linear — it's accelerating.
Private money moves faster than ITER
ITER has spent 40 years and €27B+ to reach a machine that won't produce D-T plasma until 2039. Commonwealth Fusion, founded in 2018 with MIT research, plans its first net-energy tokamak (SPARC) by 2030 — on a fraction of ITER's budget.
100 seconds at 100 million degrees
South Korea's KSTAR tokamak sustained plasma at 100 million °C — seven times hotter than the sun's core — for 100 continuous seconds in 2024. The previous record was 30 seconds. Sustained plasma is what separates a science experiment from a power plant.
China spending 3× the US per year
China committed $6.5 billion to fusion between 2023 and 2025 alone. The US spent ~$1.4B in FY2024. China is building CRAFT at $570M, and has its own CFETR tokamak planned for the 2030s — entirely outside ITER.
The '30 years away' meme is dying
Fusion has been '30 years away' since the 1950s. But in 2022 NIF achieved ignition. In 2025, Q=4.13. Helion has a Microsoft contract. Commonwealth Fusion has $3B. Most experts now say 10–15 years to first fusion power plant.
Engineering Q vs physics Q: still a gap
NIF's Q=4.13 measures fusion energy vs laser energy on the target — not total energy in. NIF's wall-plug efficiency is ~1%. Commercial viability needs Q ≥ 10–20 at wall-plug level. The physics works; the engineering is the mountain.

The Path to Commercial Fusion

2026–2027
SPARC construction
Commonwealth Fusion begins building SPARC — designed to achieve Q ≥ 2 using 20-tesla HTS magnets on a tabletop-scale tokamak
2027–2028
Helion prototype
Helion aims to demonstrate net electricity production — the first fusion machine to actually spin a generator
2030
First pilot plants?
CFS, Helion, and TAE have all targeted commercial demonstration by ~2030. The funding is there; engineering is the question
2034
ITER first plasma
ITER achieves first deuterium-only plasma (latest revised schedule). Full D-T operation pushed to 2039
2035+
Grid-scale fusion
If any private company hits its target, first grid-connected fusion plants could appear in the mid-2030s — ending the "30 years away" era
